Collaboration

Share a project and edit it with other people in real time.

collaboratesharesessionrealtimemultiplayer

Installing

  1. 1. In Layers, open the Extensions window.
  2. 2. Switch to Browse and select Collaboration.
  3. 3. Install, and confirm the access it asks for.

Installing from the Extensions window is what checks the catalogue signature and the bundle's checksum. Layers offers the update when a newer version is published.

Share a project and edit it with other people in real time. Layers has no networking of its own — install this and a project gains a shared session, leave it uninstalled and nothing in the app talks to a server.

What it does

Share Session packages the project you have open, puts it on the relay and gives you a session id to hand to someone else. Join Session takes an id, fetches that project and opens it. From then on both of you are editing the same thing: edits flow both ways as they happen, and you can see where the other people are — their cursors, their avatars, the clips they are dragging and a connection dot for the session itself. Disconnect Session ends it.

Layers draws all of that; the extension is what fills it in.

Using it

  1. Open the project you want to share.
  2. Run Share Session and send the session id to whoever is joining.
  3. They run Join Session and paste it.

The project travels as a copy. Joining opens the fetched project — it does not merge into whatever the person joining had open.

Who can get in

The session id is the key. Anyone who has it can read and write the project, for as long as the session is live. There is no second check, no account and no per-person permission. Treat a session id like the project file itself and send it to people the way you would send them the project.

What it needs

  • Your project, for reading, and a live feed of the edits made to it.
  • Local storage, for the session it is relaying.
  • Network access to `db.layers.audio`, and nothing else.

Limits worth knowing before you rely on it

  • A dropped connection ends the session. There is no reconnect yet — if the network drops, share again.
  • Sessions do not survive a restart. Quitting Layers ends the session; it is not resumed when you reopen the project.
  • Concurrent edits to the same thing are last-writer-wins. Two people editing two different clips is fine. Two people editing the same clip at the same moment means one of the two edits wins whole, rather than the two being merged.
  • Audio added mid-session does not travel. A clip someone adds after the share reaches everyone else as a waveform with no audio behind it until the project is shared again.
  • Peer cursors sit at the origin. Layers can draw where other people are, but the piece that pushes your own cursor position out to the session has not landed yet.

Platforms

macOS, Apple Silicon and Intel. Windows is declared in the manifest but has no published build yet.

Commands

Share Sessionshare
Join Sessionjoin
Disconnect Sessiondisconnect

What it can do

  • Watch every edit you make, as you make it
  • Read your project
  • Reach the network — db.layers.audio, and nothing else
  • Keep files of its own on disk
  • Add commands to the command palette
  • Draw its own panel

Layers shows you this list before it installs anything, and again before the extension first runs.
